SPAYING AND NEUTERING

Now, that all sounds good and well but; what exactly does it mean and what are the benefits? Is it a kind of anti conception for pets?? Many times I have heard this, so, let me give you some information on the subject:

What do spay and neuter actually mean?

Female dogs and cats are spayed; this means that you remove their reproductive organs. Male dogs and cats are neutered; this means that they have their testicles removed. This procedure is done surgically, the animal gets full anaesthesia. It is a simple operation and, depending on the pet’s age and health, the vet decides whether it might go home a few hours after surgery or if the pet stays overnight.

Why spaying or neutering is good for your pet?

  • it helps the pet to live longer and have healthier lives
  • spaying eliminates possibilities of uterine or ovarian cancer and minimizes development of breast cancer
  •  neutering eliminates cancer of the testicles and minimizes development of prostate cancer

How spaying or neutering helps you?

  • Spaying or neutering actually makes pet more affectionate and less aggressive
  • Spaying female cats and dogs eliminates their periods: no more continues crying, nerve breaking whimpering, neurotic behaviour and unwanted male visitors, waiting to make their move...
  • Neutering male cats and dogs minimizes the chances they go wandering around the neighbourhood, get involved into fights with other male woo-ers, it minimizes the chances they get run over on the road by cars or get poisoned

Why spaying or neutering is good for the community?

  • Animal shelters are unfortunately already overfull with stray animals
  • The less space they can provide to take more animals in, the bigger the chances are that animals have to be put down to sleep
  • Stray and homeless animals get into garbage bins searching for food, pee and poo in public or private areas or scare or upset people that have no understanding of the animal needs and misery at that time

The spaying / neutering surgery is a quick, safe and low cost procedure and it’s definitely worth it, considering the benefits all side's get out of it.
It’s a small price to pay for your pet’s health and a good prevention of more homeless, unwanted animals.

The country of myths

MYTH: my pet will go fat and and turn into a lazy creature..  ??

TRUTH: actually, most pets get fat because we overfeed them and dont give them enough exercise

MYTH: but my pet is an expensive pedigree...

TRUTH: so are most dogs and at least 1 out of 4 pedigree pets ends up in the shelter anyway.there are just too many dogs and cats: mixed kebab or purebreds

MYTH: but my dog or cat might feel less of his/her masculanity/feminity...

TRUTH: animals don't really have a sexual identity or an awareness of their sexuality, so,neutering or spaying wont change their personality.Dont worry, your pet wont end up having an identity crisis or counseling!

MYTH: its too expensive to have the operation done..

TRUTH: well, we discussed this one before...

MYTH: I will find good homes for all the puppies my dog might bring home...

TRUTH: that might be true, but, who says they ll be safe from there and on? also, those puppies might start their own family in one year time; adding more animals to the population, more changes for dogs to end up in shelter, less changes for the other stray dogs that were there before...a never ending circle
